On Tuesday morning residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with inhaling extremely polluted air that registered in the "alarming" range.

Several parts of the city recorded an AQI above 500, which represents 10x the safe threshold recommended by the WHO.
Certain monitoring stations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of eighteen hundred, representing 15 to 20 times higher than safe levels.
Firecracker Ban and Recent Developments
Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the dangerous pollution that covers the city as colder weather begins.
However recently, the current regional government approached the highest court to request a easing of the ban.
Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been criticized by conservation groups as being only about 30% lower impact – as a balance between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the celebrations also triggered a controversy with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region pointing to deteriorating air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles originating in across the border following the events.

These hazardous conditions results in high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung disorders, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
The pollution is projected to be accounting for approximately 10k premature deaths annually in Delhi.
