The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
