Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in September and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

In a document approving the custody, the judge said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
